So, what's this "I.A.M. Because He Is" Identity T-Shirt collection all about, you might ask?
Well, the answer is quite simple. But let me tell you like this...
One day, a few weeks ago, I was driving on a four-lane highway after work on my way to pick up my kids from aftercare. I noticed that all the cars around me were passing me... which my driving record embarrassingly shows is usually not the case. But I noticed the car behind me abruptly switched lanes to pass. I wasn’t in the left lane holding up traffic; so my first fleeting thought was “I must be driving too slow, let me speed up.” Then my second thought came quickly afterward, probably within half of a second, fast enough for me to refrain from pressing the gas pedal down to the floor: “Wait, How fast am I going anyway?”
So I checked my speedometer and saw that I was going about 70 mph in a 65. So, in the next half of that second I had this final thought: “I’m good.” even though I’m technically still 5 mph over the speed limit. “They speeding!” With a questionable mix of of emotions that dovetailed relief on my end and concern for them. “They need to slow down!” Which was the ultimate conclusion that I came to, given the data collected from my speedometer. Now, for the purpose of full disclosure, I did speed up a little bit just to keep with the flow of traffic… But the point here is that I made an informed decision.
Typical scenario, right? Happens every day in our commute to and from work, or school, or wherever your life takes you. But, here’s the thing:
Identity works like a speedometer. In the midst of distraction, our identity, like a speedometer, reveals our truth. Are we going to fast? Are we going too slow? But once we identify our "speed," it is then up to us to decide what to do about it. Do we need to change lanes? Do we need to turn on hazards to indicate crisis? Do we need to flash our lights to warn others to proceed with caution? Are we content to stay at the speed we are going? Do we want to speed up a little bit to keep with the flow of traffic?
IDENTITY is the data that helps you “identify” how to navigate life. It helps you uncover your strengths, weaknesses, gifts and passions. And it ultimately leads you back to your Creator, with an understanding that we were created by God, for God’s glory. But. Even more noteworthy is the fact that IN GOD, not only were we created, but we were given our very identity along with everything we will ever need to live a life of purpose.
God’s word says in 2 Peter 1: 3 TPT: “Everything we could ever need for life and godliness has already been deposited in us by his [The Lord’s] divine power.” The great thing about discovering who you are in Christ is that it changes your perspective and causes intentionally. When we know who we are, we pursue purpose, and we know how to show up in the world. Then we do it. Confidently. It all starts with finding your truth.
